Default Time to un-lurk!

Hi folks!

I'm Jen, from Nottinghamshire in the UK and I'm still finding my way with orchids. So far I've managed to acquire several phals, two Paphs, some Onc. intergenerics and Miltoniopsis, and a lone Dendrobium Nobile-type, Cymbidium, Cattleya, Zygopetalum and Ludisia discolor, almost all of which have been discounted "rescues" or from my oddly priced local garden centre (£3.99 for a healthy phal? I'll take that!).

I think I've had reasonable success to date (two deaths racked up, that's not TOO awful right? ), thanks to lurking around on the board and passively absorbing advice. Although, I did manage to sunburn my Miltonidium this week thanks to the unexpected arrival of summer to these shores...

Hope to see you in a thread near here soon

Welcome to Orchid Board Jan

I live a bit further south, but I work on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (right on the border, we think on the map the border goes through our building).

It's been rather hot the last few days hasn't it. My greenhouse got up to 38C on Sunday which I think is a record. Quite pleasent that today is a bit cooler (at least where I work, it was still baking hot and bright sunshine when I left home this morning.)

People say I'm much less trouble when I lurk!

I don't mind either because like you, I can do some quiet reading and learning. I learned things today that surprised me. Things I learned that I didn't know I needed to learn.

Welcome into the light ma'am.

Lorna

Sounds like you are doing great! Unfortunately, weather can catch you by surprise, no matter how long you have been growing orchids. We just had some extreme heat here - I know to move plants that usually get afternoon sun, but have never had plants getting morning sun outside burn even during hot weather ... Well, I bet you can guess what happened ...
