Default Hello from Michigan

Hello, I got bit by the orchid bug going on a year now. I live in Michigan, far away from any big cities. I still have my first 2 orchids along with 17 others. Most are Phals, including 6 mini phals, one is a cattleya. And 2 are from Larrys orchids, they were orphan orchids for 5 dollars. Those 2 being so cheap and me being so new to orchids I thought it was good starter plants. But they are not phals, I think they might be cattleyas but im not sure.

I went to Porters Orchids about a month ago and was so excited since it was my first orchid nursery ive gone to I didnt pay attention to the health of the orchid I got. it wasnt until I got home, (which is a 2 hour drive from that place) that I noticed all the roots on my new phal were rotten except one root that wasnt in good condition. Ive been trying to nurse that phal and 5 rescues back to health for months. none are showing signs of new growth. And to top it off I got seaweed extract the other day and accidently over fertilized ALL of my orchids, burning there roots -.-. um, they seem to be ok for the time being.

ive been reading as much as I could on orchids since I got my first one. But it doesnt seem like I can learn enough lol.

If you mean you over fertilized with seaweed extract, it may not be so bad. Seaweed extract is not a fertilizer. It is just seaweed (kelp) and has some growth and root promoting hormones. It is usually given with fertilizer. So it likely wouldn't burn the roots like an overdose of fertilizer could. Good luck with your rescues!

I like how fast I got responses, thanks . if the seaweed extract isnt a fertilizer then is it possible it stained the roots instead of burned them? once I can add photos I will. And ill add a photo of the 2 Orphan orchids im hoping someone can tell me if they are cattleyas or a different kind. Also the seaweed extract I have is "Ohrstroms maxicrop liquid seaweed plus iron: specially formulated for acid loving plants" . out of the different kinds I seen at the hydroponics store that kind i thought would be best since it said it was for orchids. I followed the dose it says to use. but should I use a smaller amount? I know on here its said often to use fertilizer in small amounts then what the bottle says. And even though the extract isnt fertilizer id hate to be doing something thats harming these amazing plants
