Howdy from Oregon!
OrChIdS are consuming my brain; I'm hoping coming here will help keep me from filling up my apartment and emptying my wallet with orchids. Oh yeah, and I'm looking forward to learning about all things orchids, especially Phals. They are my favorites so far, but I've also yet really looked into the other main groups, so that could all change. In time, they may all become my favorite orchid.
I really really really enjoy buying discounted orchids because I'm excited to see if I can't help them become the best they can be, outshining their super market beginnings. That's what got me hooked. A couple of weeks ago, I bought one of those dyed green, white orchids from Wal-mart for half price. The flowers are dying off, and I'm looking forward to cutting the spike and giving it some TLC to improve it's roots and leaves and get it ready for next year.
So yes, that is my entire orchid background. I look forward to snooping about and hopefully posting things I find in the future!

I'm afraid we're mostly orchid addiction enablers, so we may not be helpful in keeping you from filling up your apartment

Well it was worth a shot. If I end up homeless, rooming with a million orchids in a box under a bridge somewhere, I'll know how to avoid being responsible for myself and blame everyone on this forum.

Yes, you will see more and more orchids that you must have and learn all the methods of acquiring them. Not a good way to curb an addiction...quite the opposite.

Welcome vermin06! I am also a Phalaenopsis orchid rescuer. It has been a real pleasure to find a discounted, no longer in bloom plant and getting it to grow and flower. This is a great place to find information. You did not post where you are in Oregon, but another great source of information is to join your local Orchid Society.
There is one in Salem, Oregon. Here is a link: http://www.cherrycityorchidsociety.org/.
There is also a large society in Portland. Here is their link: http://www.portlandorchidsociety.org/.
And then there is the Oregon Orchid Society. Here is their link: http://oregonorchidsociety.org/oos-orchid-vendors.
These are the three societies i know about, there might be others. I think there is a society in Willamette.
If you thought that you could ever get by with just one Orchid variety, once you start interacting with folks on this board and in person, you'll be pleasantly surprised!
