Smile Hello! New to Orchid Board

Hello,

I am new to Orchid Board though I have had phals and paphs for nearly 7 years. I am grateful to have had success with them. Recently, in an attempt to diversify, I added oncidiums and a miltonia. These beautiful orchids are not quite as "easy" OR I am not sure how to care for them properly.

I have been so thankful to read questions posed by others on this board. The answer have been great. It
is wonderful to see how supportive everyone is.

I hope to post photos soon.

Hello and welcome!
I find oncidiums do great for me in red lava rock and watered frequently. Large pieces of lava rock on the bottom and middle, smaller at the top. My roots didn't fair well in bark or moss or bark and moss. The rock is also nice as when it outgrows the pot, you don't need to pick off the old rock...it doesn't deteriorate.
I now grow only the smaller oncids but had larger ones earlier in my orchid career (I needed the space for the cattleyas). Once these get going, they really become monsters! Hope this helps!

Miltonias like media to remain lightly moist, as do most Oncidiums (tho there are a few who like slightly drier)

Thank you so much for your welcomes and ideas. I am hoping to post pictures as soon as I figure out how.

Regarding the oncidiums, I decided to try to repot them this weekend only to find there was soil at the bottom. I was shocked and quickly fixed that problem. It is amazing how important it is to check out the roots...even if purchased from a reputable florist.

Thanks Again!

Welcome to the Board! Hope you enjoy your time here.

BTW - in case you don't know - before you can post pics, you have to make 5 posts - this keeps spam down.
Enjoy!
