I'm new, how are you?

Hi

I've been gaining lots of valuable info from this board and finally decided I need to join. So I did!
I'm new to this board as well as new to orchids.

I bought my first in November, it's a mini phal purple/fuchsia, and I think it bloom blasted .... I believe that's possible anyway.

Second one I bought (after Valentines Day) is a normal (standard size?) phal, white with fuchsia lips and 'blush.'
2 beautiful spikes with many blooms.

Don't tell anyone, but I'm also experimenting with the first one's spike that I chopped off. Someone else on their blog said he just stuck the spike in some water and got a keiki eventually. I chopped it off so I figured it wouldn't hurt anyone to just stick it in a bowl of water for a while. Going on a few months and it's still mostly green. I have low expectations on the crazy experiment, but hey, a girl can try.

So.... I think I've posted more than enough info to break the ice.

Any tips for a new person other than what's on the new people thread/forum thingy?

You'll learn that I like "quotations," ({parenthesis}), and /slashes/. And smilies. ;P

Tips for new orchid growers? I'd have to say learn to master Google/Bing or whatever your search engine may be. You will undoubtedly come across information that isn't covered extensively in any forum, and need to reach out to the whole of the internet to find it.

Oh, and have a good auto-translate function or website - believe it or not, you'll find really good information hidden in websites that aren't of your native tongue. I can't tell you how many times I've come across excellent information on Japanese websites, or even French or German websites.

And to echo everyone else: read, read, read. When I first started growing, I actually got a three-ring binder and kept notes, copies of webpages, and whatever bit of valuable information I could find, in it.

Lastly: have fun, and make sure to stop and smell the Cattleyas (but not the Bulbophyllums - they smell NASTY).

Thanks for your help so far! I am soaking up as much info as I can. Google is my friend.
I am already following a handful of very helpful blogs using google reader. Awesomeness.
I'm not feeling overwhelmed quite yet thankfully. I know it's a lot of info and people have varying opinions, but I love to see all the angles just in case one orchid likes such in such better than my other orchid.

Can you guys tell me what the icons are on the bottom right?
I see Like, Share (those are obvious) and then quote. Is quote how you would "reply" to someone's specific comment so they know what you're referring to?
What are the other two icon/symbol/pictures? Two pieces of paper and then paper and a pencil? Copy maybe, and....?

And should I sign with my real name/nick name like most of you seem to? I don't mind. It's not my SS# or anything. Is it just preference?

I'm used to things like Facebook, but new to forum type set ups.

"Quote" you got right - you'd select that, then when you get to the new post page, you'll have "quoted" the entire post made by whomever made the post attached to the "quote" button. I.E. if I selected the quote button for you, I'd reply with your entire post in a set of quotes (and maybe different colors, background, etc.).

The next one is Multi-Quote, which will quote several people of your choosing. Works the same way as the regular Quote button.

The last icon is for Quick Reply. All that does is make a little section at the bottom of the post you're on, and let you reply with the entire previous page in view. Honestly, I don't use that often, because I like to have more space to format my replies/posts.

Name-wise, you can use whatever name you like - it's all personal preference. I figure if someone's gonna get me, they're going to have to get through 6'2" and 350 pounds of me, first.
