Plant lover, and new to orchids
Hello, my name is Katerina i'm a college student that's going into nursing school soon and i got crazy into plants about a year and a half ago but i only recently decided to give orchids a try. A friend of mine has about 6 phalaenopsis or so and she loves them but they don't bloom very often and i thought orchids were tough to take care of, she takes care of them like regular house plants. See with me i have an obsession with knowing the exact specific care every kind of plant needs, i am anal about that if there is one little difference i will stick to it (of course sometimes i bend the rules lol). Anyway i purchased my first orchid at a farmers market in union square in new york city "fuller's suset" i love it! and i love how they don't require crazy amounts of sun and water (trust me my adeniums sure make me want to pull my hair out with their needs) After my phal i discovered the Vanda pakchong blue and had to have it! it came all the way from hawaii and the seller gave me a free plant, no idea how to take care of this one though and never heard of it either, called Vandofinetia white crane. Anyway hope to meet nice people here and i'll gladly help others with what i know.

Oh, that is a nice freebie. Yours is a cross with *'Neofinetia falcata' in it. They reclassified the Neofinetia falcatas as vanda falcata now. I don't have this cross but I treat my neos like my vandas and they seem to do very well. Hopefully someone has this cross and can give you specific advice.
I am also a plant person. The orchids are just a part of the collection.

Hi, and welcome to the orchid board!
I also buy orchids from vendors at Union Sqaure every so often. One vendor carries so many beautiful phals at a good price. such temptation! haha
Fuller's Sunset has pretty flowers. I too love yellow flowers, and I have Sin Yuan Golden Beauty.

Now that the weather gotten so cold so fast, I probably should stop buying those colorful phals as phals bought in the cold season go through some major bud blast once brought in the home. I guess it's due to the extreme temperature swing.
Or I should just show up first thing in the morning to the market and bring them home in a taxi to minimize the temperature difference they experience.
This saturday is supposed to be slightly warmer and it's also a big market day so I think I will just swing by the union square just in case I see something I love.

Welcome to the Board where you'll learn lots and gain from other's experience. You'll also get great ideas and will want the great orchids people show.
I was in NYC a week or two ago and visited the Union Square Market (Silva Orchids). Even though it was late in the day, the selection was pretty good and I had a good chat with the proprietor. I ended up purchasing 2 Tolumnia for $20 that were spiked which I will add to a mount in the Spring.

Well, it looks like Union Sqaure farmer's market is still closed. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend and I was all excited about the visit, but oh, well...
By the way, the other larger vendor with many houseplants and garden plants carry lots of phals.
I buy phals from them sometimes.
I got some cattleyas and other interesting stuff from Silva.
