Hey all,

I'm very new at orchids and super glad to be here! I garden in the Chicago suburbs, so will grow my orchids inside. I already have a small growing space with lights set up!

Thanks, all!

Hi, neighbor Kevin! (Well, almost - Naperville's a world away from Des Plaines!)

Hello from Chicago, Where do you buy orchids? Other than Lowes, Home Depot, I've been to Hauserman's Orchids, but always looking for other good places to buy new plants locally.

BKFSRS, I have very few orchids, but so far I have 3 sources: Tropical Plants and More in Mississippi (priced right for young plants), Hauserman's (great place but pricey), Craigs List (a woman selling off all her orchids). Honestly, if I got one at HD or other big box, I would wait 'till they put it on sale after flowering; then you can pick it up for about $5! The problem is they only tell you what genera it is, if that. Where do you shop for orchids?

I generally mail order specific plants. Hauserman's is a favorite and the prices can be good for the sale plants. I've also found that Carter & Holmes has bench clearing specials in the summer. I bought 12 plants for $90 with free shipping last summer. Of course, they are 2-3 years from blooming.

For spur of the moment purchases , I like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and local nurserys with the post blooming table at 50% off, though I often find that these are no bargain even at 50% off. They key is to choose a healthy plant not just one with lots of blooms.

I'm heading to Southern California in November and plan to hit the Orchid Trail to see what I can find.
