Wink Hi ya'll from Tennessee!

, I'm new to the orchid bug that has bitten me pretty hard. I recieved my first and most prized orchid on Valentines Day as a gift. It is a very beautiful and unique purple and white Harlequin Phal.

Sadly, as I have heard from many people, it was planted in Sphag moss and I'm guessing I overwatered it and it started to die. I replanted it in some Miracle Grow Orchid Mix and I have barely saved it from death. It's now slowly coming back with two new leaves, small leaves at that. Even dispite how much of the root mass I had to cut off, it has come back. Did I mention it's also in too big of a pot? I didn't know that till I buried mysself deep in orchid books. In it's sorry state, I"m afraid to move it into a bigger pot.

I also used to have about 9 other Phal's that did wonderfully. Sadly though, these one by one, died from either crown rot or root rot and I was unable to save those guys. I still have my Harlequin and one small new Equis phal and my other Leopard Prince. Equis came from Kroger, still in the plastic "bag pot" inside a clay pot and my Leopard came from Home Depot.

Like a newbie, I didn't have enough knowledge to save my other Phals not to mention the aged fast growing spent potting media they were in. But I'm hoping to fix that with help and advice from fellow Orchid lovers.

Again, I'm glad to be aboard and hope to dive right in and learn. Feel free to coment on my long "hello" or even offer advice on my small Equis, it's just a baby, or help for my precious Harlequin.

Welcome to Orchid Board

If you've not already seen it try looking at this thread.

It's long, but there is a lot of good advise on growing Phals.

My main advice is that they like to dry quickly, don't like standing in water... however when you water they want a lot of water. Good luck.

With all the info on this board, I'm sure your phal will turn out ok. Orchids are hardy souls. You'd be surprised what they will survive. Hang in there. And Welcome!

Welcome! I am new too to this board and have learned a lot here. I also started my love of orchids with a phal. I learned, the hard way, that if I have them inside by a window I only water them once every 10 to 12 days when they are in sphagnum, this way I have had flowers for about 4 months!!When they loose their flowers I repot them or move them outside to a palm tree where I can enjoy them from a window since I live in Florida. Good luck with your orchids!! and welcome again!
