Smile Hello everyone!

Hi everyone!
I am new to this froum and just wanted to "break the ice". I have 2 phalinopsis orchids and I think one of them has root rot. I will post pics soon to get advice from you experts. But for now I will decribe it. Most of the roots are flat and brown. The bottom of the base of the leaves is all black and it was not like that when I got it. a few of the leaves are also turning brown and comming off. If this is root rot how can I stop it? If it is not what is it? Thanks for your help!

The picture is not much help...can you have a picture of the whole plant....and you can soak it for five min to loosen the roots from the media and take pictures of the whole root system...
I see two spikes...is it in bloom?
and there are new roots growing

*do not be scared to clean the roots gently under the faucet of a sink...I repot Phals even while in bloom...just be carefull not to damage any roots...but have cinnamon powder made into paste with a bit of water to dab the cut wounds just in case you need to cut off dead roots

you have some good roots left to sustain your plant and enough leaves to generate energy...
repot it on the same container and just wash clean your coarse media mix...
it is warm and you may put your plant outdoor in your area on shaded light but not direct sun(it will burn the leaves)
I think the dark discoloration on the base of your plant is superficial...it can be wiped with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide...but if it continues to spread then carve it out and disinfect and do the cinnamon paste to dab the wound
*cut shorter the spikes to about an inch

Welcome to Orchid Board

It does look like some of the roots are rotten, but others look good. The colour of the roots does not matter too much, if they are firm, if they are hollow or mushy that's when you have a problem. Some of those look as though they should be firm from the picture.

I agree with Bud's advise, but I would be slightly more worried about the dark spot, however his advise on what to do if it spreads sounds good to me as well, and if it doesn't spread then I wouldn't worry.

Good luck!
