Default Greetings - newbie orchid lover

Hi everyone! I'm a newbie to the world of Orchids - but I have fallen instantly in love with them.....I've admired them for years, but only just recently begun a collection of them. I look forward to learning all about caring for these gorgeous plants.

Thank you both Dorothy and gmdiaz for the warm welcome........I am very excited about this "adventure"....in fact I am awaiting my first online order of orchids hopefully tomorrow, or Wednesday at the latest!!! I went a little crazy and ordered 15 of them!! I started out with a few, and then the list grew, and although I tried to prune it back, I somehow ended up with them all LOL......as per your suggestion Dorothy, I have posted pics of what I have ordered.....apparently some of them will be in bloom soon, and others are very tiny, and will not bloom for a long time.....I've only ever purchased orchids in bloom from the store, and are usually quite large in size....I ordered a number of them in blooming size, but also some others that are either large, medium or small seedlings...so hopefully I don't kill them (fingers crossed) and they will all eventually look like the ones in the photos!!

Default Welcome to the OB

Hello Twilight Orchid!
Good to know there are other Canadians getting "bit" by the Orchid bug....lol!

WOW! you really got bit too!

Next step is to see if there is an Orchid society in your area. Though I find the OB is an EXCELLENT source for info, by joining an Orchid society you can get some great advice on how to grow in your area. Usually the meetings have a speaker or some very interesting topics to help it's members understand the "Ins-Outs" of Orchid growing.
Recently attended the Central Ontario Orchid Society Show in Cambridge (Ontario, Canada for those who my be confused with the name...lol!). Bought 8 more orchids and participated in the LOS (London Orchid Society's members display...we placed 1st for a Society's display!!!). Finally bought a Psychopsis (though mine is actually called a Onc. mendenhall "Mildos" FCC/AOS...but it is still from the same family).
I am just very LUCKY that I have limited space! Otherwise I would have gone crazy buying some of the other varieties that were for sale.
(FYI!...never..NEVER goto an Orchid show without a list of what you want...!)

Enjoy the OB, FANTASTIC people here with a lot of knowledge!

Mark

LOL right on Mark...thanks for the welcome and the good suggestions! I will take a look and see what I can come up with.....

I"ve got 6 Phalenopsis (4 currently blooming, 2 not) and 2 large planter cymbidiums not in bloom.....I've also got several hibiscus and some other plants in my house...Shamrock, large mandevilla, Stephanotis, Epiphyllum, and Pothos.....with this order coming tomorrow, I'm going to have to do some major rearranging....and maybe some "gift giving"... LOL...but it's all fun....

I see you have an attraction to the 'floofy' catts - what a wonderful array of colors you have chosen
Great choices!
Oh you must see my hibiscus here - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...us-anyone.html
I have a Belize Breeze, a Montego Wind and a Hurricane Lily from the Yoder Brothers
I love them just as much as my orchids

Hi and welcome to Orchidboard

Sounds like you are well on your way to full addiction

You'll find some wonderful folks here at OB...varied locations around the world, varied collections, varied ways of growing...and you now have access to all of their advice You're gonna love it here!

Another word of advice in addition to

...

I always make sure I have a paper and pen with me so I can write down the names of the plants I find interesting (yes, it's a large piece of paper ).

That way, I can do some research on it to make sure it will grow in my conditions before making an impulse purchase...although, I have come home from shows with plants I had no intention of buying!
