HELP is what I need from as many passionate teachers I can get!
I have joined other forums and I feel there aren't any true Lovers of teaching Orchids. I am a beginner but i do nothing at half speed, so I need teachers who want to help and keep up with me. I have almost 30 orchids and i just got into Intergeneric Oncidiums, Oncidiums, Zygo's, and my newest Fav...Miltoniopsis. I have heard they are hard re-bloomers but I'm not giving up so easy. People also said I didnt have what Phals needed to grow but they are! .....I admire and so wish to get all the things I need to watch my orchids flourish in my home like all of the senior growers I so look up to! I am on a budget so creativity is some what a must. Not to mention I live in the desert! HELP, HELP, HELP, is all i want please...and hello!

WELCOME ABOARD !!!!
Your grow zone will allow you to grow your orchids outdoors even in winter...it is dry arid desert on your outskirts...but not in Las Vegas...I walked around the strip and there are plants and trees that thrive...even the suburbias have manicured lawns and sprawling hills with a magical lake in the middle...
If you have a patio, you can place your orchids in a shaded part and hang some or you can be a windowsill grower...
The plants in your posession get to be large specimens thru the years...so might as well think ahead...oh and I suggest Vandas and Mokaras...you will grow and bloom them majestically

I live in the desert as well and have reflowered Miltoniopsis in the past. I just got a new one and I'll be reading your posts for tips from people here too.

Hi Tiffany
& Welcome to OB!
I'd love to help you out. But unfortunately, I do not have much if any experience with the genera you listed. I am sure someone will chime in with assistance anytime now. We have a wonderful group of people on the board.

Hello- I have one intergeneric Oncidium that I got in March of 2011 as a gift. It is Burrageara Stefan Isler. It was in bloom at the time. It is really easy to grow and I rebloomed it this year. It grew a new pbulb during the summer and bloomed in January with a larger spike than I got it with. I grow it under lights during the cold months and I put it outside in the summer. Give it as much light as it will tolerate without burning it. The thin leaves can burn easily. I find that they like a lot of water when growing new pbulbs. Make sure the newest pbulb doesn't shrivel. If mine does it plumps up again pretty well but it might just be the hybrid I have. I don't have any of the others you listed but I'm sure someone will help you with those. Good luck and I hope that helps some!

Thank You all
As for where I live :/ I actually live in pahrump which if familiar, is 60 miles out it is slightly cooler here and higher in elevation. Anyone know it? I'm curious because when talking of growing outside it makes me wonder.
I wish I could get my hands on a Vandal. I love them! Anyone know a trust worthy shipper? I will post pics of my intergenerics one is Beallara hybrid Oncidium.
Now....how did you get your Miltoniopsis to bloom!? I want more and am afraid.
Thank you for the welcomes this forum seems a bit more patient already.

There isn't any real 'technique' to get a plant to rebloom. You just need to give the plant what it needs and it will bloom on its own. Light, water, air, food, etc. Look online for culture sheets on the orchids you grow. For the Oncidium intergenerics, look what genera are in that hybrid and grow it some where in the middle of those genera it is made of. Culture sheets will give you the guidelines for growing the plant but you will have to tweak your conditions the best you can to make that environment. We can help you by giving you our experiences but just because it works for one person doesn't mean it will work for another. Everyone grows differently. We all live in different areas but even if we where neighbors your environment still would be different. Everyone has different light sources, waters differently, etc. A lot of it is trial and error. We will help you as much as we can though!
There are tons of great growers out there. Look online and if you find something you like at a certain vendor ask us about that vendor and we can tell you our experience with them. It's a lot of fun to order online!
You can grow outside as long as it is the right temperature range for the plants and you have the right place to put them to get the right light levels. If it gets too cool in the winter months you can just bring them inside. That is what I do. Of course our weather is way different! I don't think you will be able to grow outside all year long because winter night time lows can get too cold. Summer might be too hot too. For some orchids anyway. Vandas might be okay but the others you listed will not like 110°! I don't grow Vandas so don't take my word for it. Vegas can get into the 30°sF at night, right?
