Unhappy Hi from Miami

My name is Joy, i live in Miami Fl. I am a bad bad orchid mummy. I fell in love with orchids when i moved here from England in '06 i have a 4 phals and they don't like me very much right now. My Cat' on the other hand is showing me some love and i just bought a teeny tiny Vanda.

My babies hang in baskets from a tree, they get sun in the AM and shade for the rest of the day.

One of my baskets has been invaded by small white "mites" and when i lift the plant a bit i see silvery white eggs. That's what poked me into registering.
I need help being a better mummy to the babies lol
i bow to your wisdom and humbly ask for help

Welcome to Orchid Board, Joy! I'm in Ft. Lauderdale. I'm not suprised that your cattleya is doing well. South Florida is the perfect environment for cattleyas. Your phalaenopsis should be repotted once a year with this heat and humidity.

The silver eggs might be ants which won't harm the orchids. To be on the safe side you'll need to spray the plant that's infested. You can get Ortho Rose Pride or Bayer's Rose and Flower insecticide from Home Depot or Lowes. Safer's Insecticide Soap can also work for small insect problems. Spray the entire plant and medium, wait a week and spray a second time minimum but three weeks in a row is better.

Welcome to Orchid Board Joy.

I'm not sure I can help much with the eggs in your pot, but Tuckers advice sounds good. I just want to say hi

Hi Rosie and thank you Tucker, I'll head over to the store on saturday and pick up what I need then. I didn't know about the phals and repotting once a year, I'll do that this weekend too. How important is that overall?

The phals did put out spikes but the buds went yellow and fell off.

(Rosie I just noticed you're from the midlands, I used to live near Stamford in Lincolnshire )

I repotted and took some pics of the 'chids. I'm on the iPad so I can only post a link to my Flickr. Please know that I pretty much ignored them for a long time and I'm surprised they aren't dead. They look a bit beaten up though
