Hello from Spain

I just want to introduce myself as a new member of this site.My name is Betty & I live on the Costa Blanca in Spain.
I recently purchased a pink Phaleanopsis Orchid & I am hoping you will give me tips on caring for it.It appears to be very healthy with lots of grey looking roots around the top of the pot some of which have dried crinkly ends on them.I can also see very green roots through the clear plastic container it is in.There are one or two straggly bits hanging out the bottom of the pot.Should I cut them off?
The plant is in a bark medium.
Also can anyone on here tell me what zone number I am in.

Hi Betty and WELCOME to the forum. Does your Paph have a tag? Glad your roots seem to be in good condition. When I purchase a new orchid I usually repot it. That way I can check all the roots and if there are any that are brown and dead, they can be cut off. Have a good peek under the leaves to make sure there are no spots or bugs etc.

As for zone, perhaps you might want to do a google search.

You will find very knowledgeable people on this forum so ask as many questions as you need to.

Welcome to Orchid Board! You're in zone 10 which is excellent for growing orchids outdoors. Phals are low light orchids so you would want to grow it indoors or on a covered patio where it doesn't get direct sun. The parts that are hanging out of the bottom of the pot can be cut off or not, it's up to you. It won't hurt the plant. When you water the orchid, put it in the sink and run water through the medium until it's very wet. Then don't water again until the plant is almost completely dry. You can tell it's dry when the pot feels much lighter and the roots that you can see through the pot are a white color. When the flowers eventually fall off consider repotting. You can come back to Orchid Board and ask about repotting at that time. Good luck.

Thank you for your message.If by tag you mean the little ticket like card with the name phaleanopsis on it & a picture,yes it has.On the back of it there is a sun,a half sun,a watering can half full & a knife & fork crossed out.
No words of instructions whatever.I have looked under the leaves they are completely clean with no bugs or spots.I think the two bits poking through the bottom must be dead root as they are brown so I will cut them off.I see someone has replied telling me I am in zone 10 so that will be very helpful info for me.
Is it OK to repot whilst my plant is in full bloom or should I wait until it has finished flowering?My orchid is on my covered porch which faces North East.It is in a clear plastic container with holes in the base & this is standing
inside a square glass vase with glass pebbles in the base.
is this Ok & do I need to put any water in with the glass pebbles to create humidity?

Thank you for letting me know which zone I am in as that is really helpful.Our water supply is not drinkable for us without boiling first,however we do have a filtered water system alongside it.At the moment I have used the filtered water do you think that is correct?

I am glad you have found us.
Read the postings of the members and specifically the "sticky" on Phalaenopsis by Marty...
do not use the filtered water...use directly from faucet if you have checked your water system analysis online. If not: distilled water is best.

*you can grow vandas outdoors because you have humidity in your atmosphere...you also have very short periods of frost in winter.

I enjoyed my stay in Alicante 4 years ago...in Valencia, Sevilla and Barcelona...unforgattable! I had a BLAST!
