Hello Female
Default Hello

Hi! My name is Samantha and I live in Savannah, Ga. On Valentines Day my husband brought me my first orchid and it was absolutely beautiful. Not being born with a particularly green thumb I have been researching how to properly care for it, and along the way stumbled onto this forum. I think I have been doing pretty well by my orchid, it seems like a happy plant. It is a noid phal that produced nine amazing blooms from one spike. The leaves are a nice deep green and a few days ago a new leaf began ti grow. It is potted in a clear 6'' pot, and I am assuming that it had been in there a while because there are several aerial roots that are hanging over the edge. I am wondering if I need to repot because of this, also the medium it is in worries me-all sphag moss-as it seems this has a tendancy to cause root rot. Any and all advice is more than welcome and I hope to learn alot from all of you!

Hi Samantha and welcome to Orchid Board

You don't need to repot just because of arial roots. Phals tend to like growing them and they are not a problem, or a sign it needs repotting necessary, although it sometimes can be.

The thing to look for is the bark and whether it is broken down significantly. If it is then it's a good idea to re-pot but you don't necessarily need a bigger pot. You should fit it into the smallest pot the roots will fit in to.
