Hi from a new member in the midwest Male
Default Hi from a new member in the midwest

Hello everyone, my name is John and I started my addiction almost 20 years ago but because of marrage, children and a couple of moves, my collection was lost. I was again bitten five years ago and you know the rest. I currently have about 450 orchids growing under lights in the basement. I use T8 and T5 flourescents and Sunlight combination 250MH and 250HS fixtures. I look forward to learning more from the members especially the ones growing under lights.

Hello, John, and welcome to the site. If you have 450+ plants and you only started collecting them five years ago, you've made very good progress. I've been growing for nearly twenty years and I only have a couple dozen plants (which I'm still told by unsympathetic friends and loved ones is too many :-). Very nice yellow cattleya hybrid you uploaded a picture of. Welcome again, and good growing to you.

Steve

Welcome aboard the OB John!

WOW 20 years!!! I am sorry you "lost" your collection. That must have been depressing; I can only inmagine

Your basement looks great filled with all those 'chids!

Maybe one day I will get there!
Again, welcome!!!

Hey John, and welcome. 450 plants? wow! You have it bad. I also grow under lights in my basement, but I use LED lights.

Best Regards
David

Hi everyone. Thank you for your replies. Yes it was sad to loose my orchids but I gained two wonderful sons. I have also been very lucky that my wife has told me to take over more of the basement (she doesn't know what she has unleashed!). Steve a couple of dozen are simply not enough, keep going. Dorthy I will try to figure out how to post more pictures as I get them. Gloria when it comes time to repot, I am in the basement for what seems like months. Candice I have enjoyed reading your posts and the best way I found to expand is to work with flasks. Dave how are the LED lights working? It would seem that the electric cost would be alot lower. Hope to talk to all of you again soon.

John
