Hello from the daughter of an orchid seller
Default Hello from the daughter of an orchid seller

Hello everyone!

I'm just new in here and wanted to learn everything about raising orchids. My mom who is an orchid lover passed away and she left this task to me I'm afraid I have no idea about orchid raising because an artist by nature so here I am scouring through the WWW to find orchid forums.

Is there any way that I can mix painting and orchid raising?

Absolutely, I guess they are both art forms........perhaps you might even turn your hand to painting nature and maybe even orchids in nature.

Imagine having a conservatory where you could paint surrounded by lush orchids growth everywhere and beautiful blooms to inspire you. And of course the requisite classic music for that extra inspiration.

Mmmmmmmmm and then a glass of red wine you would need to have whilst painting and enjoying your surrounds...........yep that about sums up a perfect environment........well for me anyway......but of course we were talking about you.

;-)

P.S. Welcome to the forum.......you will love it here, lots of good people and great advice.

Welcome to the OB Portrait!!!!

I used to be an artist, but have been lost since I joined the Reserves and had to finish college. I just lost time where I could be painting. Anyways........so is your mother the orchid seller?
How long had she been raising orchids?
I am surprised she didn't raise you up with them as a chils so to speak. I have heard stories about orchid growers and their children playing in the greenhouse and braiding the Vanda roots, and taking flowers off plants and pressing them
I am sure you will do just fine takin on your mother's wishes!!!
Welcoem and please ask any questions you may have!!!
Oh and please post of your art!
I would love to view them!

Hi Portrait and welcome to Orchidboard

My condolences to you on the loss of your mom. You've come to the right place to learn about taking care of the treasures she left you. We'll help you with any questions you might have and then while you're admiring your handy work, you'll know your mom is admiring it too

We are all crazy about pictures of orchids so taking it to a higher level (no offense to the photographers here )such as painting can only be a good thing.

What orchids do you now have? Are they being grown indoors or outside?

If you need help with anything, let us know.

Welcome aboard. That's a great combination, art and orchid (beauty). Looking forward seeing your portrait of your orchids.

It will not inspire me. It will just remind me of my mom. I'm sure I'll just paint cemeteries and leave a heartache sig in my artwork

Hi Candice! My mom has been an orchid lover since I was a baby. When I turned 6 my mom told me that I'd pick up fallen orchid flowers, press them in between pages of our encyclopedia and paste them in my school pad paper. When I turned 11 my mom told me that I cried a lot because my aunt used the pressed flowers for her wedding invitation. Isn't that interesting?

Hello cb977! The problem now is that I don't even know which of the flowers we have in the garden is vanda because I call them all as BUTTERFLIES. I'm really lost

Thanks everyone for a very warm welcome.

I know how hard the loss of a parent is...and it feels like the hurt will never ease...but in time, it does. Your mom spent her life caring for beautiful things, she wouldn't want you to spend yours painting cemetaries.

If you take some pictures of your orchids and/or list the names on their tags, your new friends here at OB can help you figure out what you've got and how to care for them.

We're here to help

Hello Portrait,
Welcome to the OB! I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm sure your mother would be very proud that you are carrying out her passion. You never know, putting your pains into your art might just fuel your passion, and make the art that much more meaningful. If nothing, at least you will be expressing it in your own way, and getting it off your chest.....could be good for you. Although the orchids bring pain to you now, over time, they will probably be a very nice reminder of things that only you, and your mother, shared together. Every time one blooms, I'm sure she will be looking down on you.....proud as can be! Well, we are glad to have you, you will learn a lot here. Good luck, and I'll see ya around the board!
