Hello From MI
Hello, just joined. I frequent many different forums and I must say this is one of the best laid out forums I have seen. A few years ago I tried to grow a phal and never got it to bloom again. I am sure I could have tried harder. Today I walked past some clearance dens at Lowes and couldn't resist. So I scooped up 3 of them for less than $20 and here I am again. I am sure I will have questions and am looking forward to learning all I can.

Welcome Brian to the OB!!!! Glad you decided to give it a go again! I started about 4 years ago, and killed 5 orchids, and I started again about a year ago also! Kinda funny how you are just drawn to them? I picked up 3 phals in one day from Lowes...they were done blooming so the manager gave them to me for $1 each! Couldn't resist!
Please ask any questions you may have, there is so much information here its unbelievable! I am positive you will be overwhelmed with all the info you will receieve!!!!
Again welcome Brian!

Hi Brian,
Welcome to the forum. In the over 13 years of growing orchids, I have lost quite a few. I still do and have done so this summer. Most of the time, each loss is a learning experience; as is each success as learning experience.
You'll learn a lot here. There are a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people here. I have also found it to be the best orchid forum.

Welcome, Brian! I quite growing orchids for about 10 years - moving countries made having a collection pretty difficult! But I started up again last year with one or two just to see if the fascination was still there - and guess what? I don't think it ever goes away! Now, I'm up to nearly 50 different plants and - thanks to the people here - I'm trying new ones all the time!
Glad you found the Orchid Board! Welcome aboard!

I live in Riverview which is in SE Michigan, about 45 min from Ohio. I just got done repotting the 3 Dens I got from Lowes. Two of them looked really healthy. The third had some root rot. Cut away the bad stuff and potted them all in new medium.
Can anyone recommend a good fertilizer?

I use MSU formulation mix from FirstRays (an Orchid Board Sponsor Product Listing - MSU-type Fertilizer for Pure Water - 5 lb formulated for "pure water" which would be RO, distilled or clean rain water. I use RO water. I dillute it to approx 125ppm Nitrogen. I also add DynaGrow Protekt, which is basically silicone which is supposed to boost the plants' immunity to heat (increase heat-tolerance.) Check out Ray's site as there is a ton of free tutorial stuff on all sorts of topics. The best one is the fertilizer info. Again, welcome.
