A neophyte member, but here I go...
I'd like to say hello to everybody. I'm just browsing on threads re: long vanda roots and saw the diff styles of pruning or cutting being done. Thought it's bad to disturb vanda roots. What I was thinking before and was about to ask is - can we just loosely tie the roots in mid length and hang or hook the tying material to the basket? Would you rather recommend the cutting of the roots? What if the plant is in spike or flowering already? Hope you can enlighten me. Thanks.

Welcome to Orchid Board.
I'm afraid I'm not sure on Vanda's so hopefully someone else will be able to answer your question. However I would have thought that tying the roots up as you suggest would be better than cutting them.

Glad you found us!
I don't grow Vandas, so can't answer your question - but I know a lot of members DO grow them, and should be able to help. gl!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!
I don't grow Vandas either, but if it's flowering I would wait, I wouldn't cut its roots unless it's life threatening.
Hope somebody comes by with more experience on Vandas.

Warm welcome
Thanks a lot my new found friends for your warm welcome. I really appreciate it and hope that I can contribute towards the welfare of every member and not only ask for some needed help. Still be waiting for more experienced, weighted opinions regarding very long vanda root system. Best regards.

Welcome and Hello ! Sit back, relax and read postings from some of our members where you can glean precious knowledge on how to care for your orchids based on their wealth of experience...
I have very long vanda roots on five of my vandacious plants...
I curled them inside a glass vase(like the way ladies curl hair in rollers) that I drilled holes in...
this is only for winter; because in summers(see pic) I let them all hang loose outside the fire escape of my apartment...
I suggest cut only the dead roots...do not mess with healthy roots...it takes years to grow good roots why oh why would you even think of cutting it ??!!

Long Vanda roots
Thank you Bud, Rosie and to all other friends who responded to this query. I got a lots of reassuring response from all of you. They'll sure help me with my daily orchid care regimen of my orchids. My main species of interest are the vandas and the phalaenopsis, although I got one, just one oncidium which is the 'peristeria elata' becuse I am very intrigued by the form of its flowers. But the focus of my collection right now is the v. sanderiana and v. luzonica primarily because I came from the Philippines and these are orchids native to my country of origin (probably explains my bias with these species huh?) Someday I'll post some pictures of my collection. Thanks again to all of you.
