Hello everyone,
My name is Lisa, and I live in southern ohio. My sister just joined, her user is GypsyV and thanks to her I am hooked on orchids.
Just like my sister I have bought the orchids from lowes although I didnt buy the clearanced ones like her because I found 2 that were blooming and very beautiful and I couldnt walk outta the store without them. They were both minis. Sadly both of them died, I dont know if it was from lack of light, water, or they just werent healthy. Now after going to the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society's show, I am hooked. I saw so many beautiful varieties, I wanted to buy several but I didnt have money. So I decided to join and start learning so I can be ready for when I find another I like and want to buy.
I am also in our local african violet society and want to have something else to grow.
I am interested in the smaller varieties because I dont have a lot of space to grow in, if you have any to recommend let me know!

Hi!
Welcome! It's nice to see someone else from Ohio here. I am sorry your first orchids didn't quite survive but hopefully once you learn more about them, you will find yourself successful. You might have an orchid society in your area, look online to see if you do. They are great places to pick up cheap orchids (plant sales!). A cheap medium for growing them is lava rock, which is what I use.
There are many small orchids but your growing conditions (especially light) will limit which ones work for you. Harella rectrocalla is a really nice small, easy-to-grow orchid that would probably grow well in the same light as your African violets. Good luck and have fun!
