New to orchids
Hi everyone,
A friend of mine suggested I join here to get information on these incredibly gorgeous plants. I've see them every time I visit one of the big box stores, but have been nervous about buying from one of these stores. So, in one of the posts I saw on this board, I visited a couple of online sites and chose Hausermann. I found a couple of plants I couldn't resist and hope to have them in a couple of weeks.
I'm grandma to 6 awesome kids, wife to a retired Marine, and have a business in which I carve gourds, antler, weave and coil baskets and also digitize embroidery designs. You might say I like to stay busy I also love to bake, travel, read and hang out with friends. We moved to Florida from Illinois back in April, so learning about our new area is providing lots of fun.
Hope to learn a lot here as I've always loved and wanted a few orchid plants.

Welcome and Hello!
Sit back and relax, read some of the postings of members and learn from their wealth of knowledge gleaned from years of experience on growing orchids.
Florida is a place that is conducive to growing orchids. The humidity in the atmosphere allows you to put a plant on a tree and let it survive on its own with very little human intervention.
It would be nice to post pictures of your orchids...and please post your grow zone in your profile in order to accurately advice you in the future.

Welcome to OB! It does sound like you are busy! You've likely added another hobby onto your list and you WILL become addicted to orchids!
What plants did you order from Hausermann? They are a good company with good plants.

I'm a newbie too and a windowsill grower up north, wishing I lived some place warmer, so I could get more orchids. Yes, it does get addictive! There is a wealth of information here and everyone is so nice and helpful. Enjoy your future addiction and the OB.

Thanks Bud, We don't have many trees here on our property except for palms, so I may have to settle for potted plants. I've updated my profile to show our growing region. Some say we are in 9a, others say 9b.

New to orchids
Thanks for the welcome everyone,
Silken, I ordered (1)Dtps. Deborah Wilson 'Tesuque' (Escapade x Phal. Hausermann's Barney) - peach tone in a 5" pot size and (1) Z-4375 Phal. Burning Sand 'Ablaze' (Seminole x violacea) - Peach Tone, Fragrant. It was hard to pick from all Hausermann has, but I'm kind of partial to this color.
Since we do get some cool temps in the winter months, I'm not sure about leaving this outdoors on our deck which is sheltered from direct sun. I have a lot to learn, so I'm really glad my friend recommended this forum. And the only real trees we have are palms. The other trees that are on the property are dead and we're removing them within the next month or so. We just purchased this house earlier this year and it had been vacant for about 6 months and very neglected. We keep our indoor temp at 75, which is not too cool but comfortable during the summer. During the upcoming winter months, we'll keep it moderate (not too warm).
I had a ficus tree I bought about a year ago while still up north. It wasn't doing much of anything until I moved it out to our sheltered deck this summer out of direct sun. Now, it's at least 8" taller and has 6 new leaves on it. It loves the humidity. I did repot it and I think that had a lot to do with the growth. I'll wait another year before repotting again.
I feel like I've finally found my green thumb as all my plants are doing so much better here...or am I just getting lucky?

I love the peach colored blooms too! My grandfather "Papa" in Mississippi always hybridized daylillies, and I always loved the peach toned ones. And on that note, I have found that peach colored roses tend to have some of the sweetest fragrances.
