Can not get new Flowers
Default Can not get new Flowers

Hi
I am an absolute beginner to Orchids and to this Forum. It has taken me an hour to find out how to post a question.
I have one Orchid which I bought last year. It was beautiful last year and when the flower died off I cut the flower stem off and expected it to produce another this year. Well as you have probably guessed it didn't.

Is there anyone who can give simple to understand basic instructions on Orchid care and how to get my little chap to perform again ??

Welcome to Orchid Board

Do you know what type of orchid it is? There are so many types with very different care needs that it's difficult to give advise without that. If you don't know then a picture might help, there is advice on how to post a picture in the link in my signature.

Did the flowers look the same shape as the ones in this image (click on it to enlarge it). Don't worry about the colour, just look at the flower shape.

This is a typical flower shape for the commonly sold (at least in the UK) phalaenopsis hybrids so I'm taking a guess that might be what you have.

If it looks right then take a look at this link. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ends-here.html which gives lots of information about growing Phals.

Often phals sold in supermarkets or garden centres have been forced to bloom at a time of year they would not usually, this can throw off their flowering rhythm for a while, some people say even for a couple of years. I know my new ones have always taken a while to settle down.

Also most phal hybrids sold in the mass market in the UK are temperature sensitive to prompt flowering. You need a cool down in autumn to trigger new spikes (although I also got them during the cool May this year). If you bought it last year it may not have been ready to spike in the autumn and you may have more success this autumn.

I've had a PM from gmbaker that it's actually a miltoniopsis, not a phal. (He's having problems replying to the thread).

Here is a care sheet for Miltioniopsis Miltonia - Orchid Board

Miltoniopsis flower on new growths, so before it can flower you need a new growth to mature far enough. Mine has flowered roughly annually, but still based on new growths. It has actually just started spiking over the last couple of weeks.
