Hello!
I'm new around here, bumped into this place searching around Google.
I've been doing orchids for about 10 years now. Unfortunately I had a bout of scale recently that killed half my orchids, but things are on the ups. I've got a few dendrobiums, about 10 various Phals, an oncidium hybrid, and a cymbidium hybrid. I just bought a house last year, and this year as I've been working very hard on a garden, I've decided to also get into native orchids (I'm in Chicago- zone 5). I've started this year with Cypripedium pubescens, Bletilla striata, and Spiranthes cernua. Next year I plan to add Pogonia odontoglossoides and Calopogon tuberosus, all of which are native to Illinois except the Bletilla.
Cheers!

It is great to see another new member on the Board! I definitely like the idea of growing hardy native orchids. This is a great place to come and learn from others, and also to share your own experiences. We also LOVE pictures!

Good to hear you guys like pictures because I like taking them! My Spiranthes cernua hardy orchid is days away from a full bloom, so I'll be posting pics as soon as it does!

Growing orchids anywhere is a challenge
Yeah, its a little tough with all the weather extremes. I can't even put them outside during the summer because the sun gets so hot. One of these days I'm gonna build a cold frame for them so I can screen them during the hot months. The seasons change sooooo fast here too. I set my Phals and my Cymbidium outside to get them to flower, and it can be 70s at night and a week later its in the 40s. Our weather is just plain old screwy.
