Hello everyone! I've been hanging around for quite a while, but was to intimidated to join. I'm still intimidated, but finally got up some courage. I am fairly new to orchids and am mostly ignorant on the subject. I am experimenting with a variety of orchids, trying to find out which ones will do best in my growing conditions, which ones will make it through our long, dark winters. I am a windowsill grower, no additional lighting, humidity trays etc. It's as basic as you can get. I can only utilize 1 East, 1 East/South and 1 West window, all other windows have heating vents directly underneath. Mission Impossible? Most of the orchids I bought were in bud/spike, so I could see them bloom at least once. Wish me luck!

Thank you Rabbit! I have been hanging around long enough to know that everyone is friendly and very helpful - but everyone also knows soooo much about orchids, that it makes my head spin. lol

Welcome!

I think that many newbie orchid growers that join feel the same way. I remember that when I joined (knowing really nothing about orchids) I was completely overwhelmed by the wealth of information here and by how much there was to know about them! Don't feel afraid to join in discussions it's a great way to learn and soon you'll be an orchid expert.

Your growing conditons may be a bit difficult in winter, but they are far from being impossible.

Welcome, and ditto to all the comments above. I knew nothing at all about orchids when I found the OB. I still feel like I know relatively little, but certainly more than when I joined. Having the collective knowledge of the OB behind me when I'm orchiding gives me the courage to try all sorts of new orchids. I hope it does the same for you too!

Hi all! Thank you for the warm welcome and encouragement. I plan on being around to learn and ask questions about my addiction. Btw. I had to go to the Florist today, there was this huge Miltassia, 5 spikes, one in bloom. I still can't believe I walked out without it, but keep thinking about going back.
