Hi all,

I'm from Vancouver and I've been running around here for a couple of days now trying to read everything there is. My first orchid a phalaenopsis has just been sphag-n-bagged so I needed something to distract me from that, guess what I bought 2 cattleyas (dowiana & tokyo magic).
After some searching on the internet for orchid info I found this forum and was sure it would help me in taking care of my orchids better (especially since the sphag-n-bag rescue attempt).

Phyrex, welcome to the OB! Nice taste, I was thinking dowiana will be my next buy. It's great to have you, and everyone here loves the pictures, that's the best way to reward advice. See you on the Board.

Here's a pic of the two cattleyas (tokyo magic right, dowiana left). Technically I guess the tokyo magic is a Laeliacattleya but anyway. I bought the dowiana out of bloom so I only needed to pay $7 for a very mature looking plant.

Thanks for welcoming me. The sheath (top centre) has already bloomed that's why it was $7 The lead p-bulb doesn't have any roots growing yet so it could be a while before it flowers again. I think I might repot it into bark today, just don't like the sphag.

Hi,

Sue, you'll be happy to hear that I've repotted the C. dowiana. This was actually the first plant that came from a big box store and still had healthy roots. I've also tied up the p-bulbs a bit to "force" it to grow into a bit more manageable plant instead of some kind of deamon spawn spreading its tendrils of corruption all over the place.
