Default Beginning with Beallara

Greetings from Lorane, Oregon USA. I am delighted to share with you, that over the weekend, my husband and I bought an oncidium orchid for me, for my birthday, it comes from Briggs Hill Orchids, inc. of Eugene, Oregon. My 'Beallara Marfitch "Howard's Dream" AM/AOS' is my first orchid! Although it has not bloomed yet, from the photos I've seen, it will be sensational! If I am using the right terminology, I count 6 pseudo bulbs and 14 leads that rise to a height of 35". I look forward to gleaning from all of you the joys and proper care of orchids. Can anyone share with me information specific to my orchid? Any help you can give me regarding my orchid's species, variations, culture and care will be most appreciated. When it blooms, I will post photos!

Default Orchid of the Week

Thank you for the welcome! And, thanks so much for the link to "Orchid of the Week" - great, bite-sized snipets of info for a beginner like me.

If you have suggestions as to other colorful orchids I should consider, being a novice with low-light, east and west window exposures in my Pacific NW habitat, I welcome your thoughts .

Welcome aboard. Beallara is a GREAT starter for those who like the beautiful colors etc. I love mine and they tend to bloom more than once in a season when they get big, so let it grow. Pictures please?

Default Great! Thanks! 1st Three Questions...

(Q1) to be clear about watering...the person I bought my orchid from said to let the water, with the proper ratio of Dyna-Gro (before blooming), cascade through the 4" pot (after bloom, she offers one free repotting) and drain (do this every 5-7 days; first testing to see if drying out, so I don't over-water; and, don't soak). But...I read on this board somewhere that the orchid should soak for about a half-hour before thoroughly draining. Futher thoughts on this? (Q2) Also, what does "RO" stand for, what is it's purpose, and if a product, where do you get it? (Q3a) you may already have read my discription, but if not, my orchid has 6 pseudo bulbs and 14 leads (buds...same thing?) and it came is a 4-inch plastic pot in some kind of bark. I put this inside a decorative pot; you can see in my only photo of her. So, the question is, the orchid plant appears to be healthy, therefore, may I safely assume that it's current pot is going to be adequate until after she stops blooming? (Q3b) Do orchids, in general, prefer to be somewhat root bound?

Q1. Suggestively your 5-7 days might not be enough through growing season, not to mention enviromental condtions. I grow indoors and water every 3 days with a mild fertilizer. I have never soaked my orchids for a 1/2, everyone is different when it comes to this regimen. I give my orchids a medium bath every 2 weeks but placing them in a sink and rinsing them thoroughly and than rinsing again before placing them in there rock saucer. Mine seems to be well adjusted with this regimen. The majority of my orchids have a wooden skewer in the pots and with this is an easy way to determine if the little guys need water or not.

Q2. RO means Reverse Osmosis, not well versed on this others will chime in I am sure.

Q3. Putting your orchids in a decorative pot is ok for some of us, I included. The only caution I take is that when I water them I make sure they are not sitting in water due to poor drainage. Q3b. Yes, orchids like to be root-bound. Some more than others. Some love to have there feet (roots) exposed outside of there resting place so this is well and good. They love to be nosy. The majority of my orchids are in clear plastic orchid pots and in no time they will walk their little feet right over to the side of the pot for appropriate lighting
