Welcome to the Orchid Board! Thanks for rescuing that Phal from the dumpster. Lots of people throw them out as soon as they stop flowering, don't know why really.

Somebody warned them. It's the 12th step in the Orchidaholic Anonymous program.

Seriously, I once bought an orchid (Miltonidium Issaku Nagat 'Volcano Queen') at Lowes and the tag said "enjoy your orchid. when the plant is done blooming, throw it away and let us grow more." Something's not right here. I now have two robust plants from this "throw-away".

Hello Ross,
Thanks for the post, and yes I am in MI...I live in Grand Ledge, just west of Lansing. I like Cadillac, had a good girlfriend who lived in Manton, and we partied in Cadillac a lot...of course, that was mucho moons ago.

A late welcome to you, Angela! I work at the University of Michigan. You'll learn a lot here. More than likely, you already have.

Your rescue proves that one man's trash is another man's treasure.
My sister, Kinikia, lives in Honolulu where still blooming plants make their way from hotel dumpsters to her lanai. She enjoys a variety of flowers while they last and has even re-bloomed a few.
A favorite of these is Rhynchovanda (syn: Vandachostylis) Herbert Kurihara. The plant is such a vigorous grower that the most requested souvenirs of my last three trips to Hawaii have been blooming keikis from the mother plant.
