Hello Vanda lover,
It's good to know that there are more people who are growing Vandeaceos orchids in a windowsill. I also put my orchids oudside when the weather is nice. Only when I'm sure that it's not going to rain I keep them overnight in the garden. And it must not be to cold at night.

Some of them can take it fairly cool, we go down to about 11c here at night during the summer, but I've seen it go down as low as 7c. I think they would like the rain. We don't get a lot of rain during the summer, in fact, I have frozen bottles of rain water to use on my masdevallias during the summer.

Can they really have such low temperatures. That's amazing. I know rain is no problem, But I grow them in vases. So when I leave them outside in the rain, the vase will get full with water. And then they drawn. So I only leave them oudside when the weather forecast is dry. at this moment we have good weather so now they are oudside a lot.

Willeke, you might want to try to grow them bare root over summer. That is what I do too. Until last winter I popped them back in vases when I had to bring them in and the heating went on. Last year I my vases were so big and deep that some roots suffered and that is when I started them growing bare root indoors too. Worked wonderfully!
When it's hot during the day I don't mind cold night temperatures but I haven't tried 7 C yet. 12 C is as low as I dared to go. It depends a bit on the parents/grand parents how much they can take.
Mine play outside during the day now and I still bring them in during the nights. That will change later this season.

I would like to try growing them bareroot, but I just don't have the space to hang them. So that's a bit of a problem. I hope this will work as well. Otherwise I have to think of a solution.

I've been wanting to try vase culture, but the roots are so long and the plants so big! I tried bare root in the house, but I didn't want to have to keep soaking them so often. In a basket with spag and charcoal, they only need once a week during winter, and mistings for exposed roots. Every 3rd day or so in summer works well, and our summers are dry. It is also a space saver to be able to hang them. We are in one of the warmest areas of Canada, Vancouver Island, but because we are surrounded by mountains and ocean we have cool nights. It's great during a heat wave!

For me it's working well. I don't soak them everyday. I mist them daily, and once a week I soak them and give them fertilizer at that moment. I don't have space to hang them, so this is working fine for me.

That is one of the things that I was trying to find out about vase culture! Some people were talking about soaking them every day, and I couldn't see why you would need to. I have a tiny gastrochilus japonica in vase culture, and I ould soak it if the vase is becoming dry. It must be happy, it's getting ready to bloom! For some of the smaller vandas, vase culture would be great. My 10 year old pak chong blue would need a gigantic vase!

Yes when they get to big It might give a problem, but for now it's allright. So I hope they can stay in there a few more years. Nice that one of your orchids is getting ready to bloom. What kind of orchid is it?

It is a gastrochillus japonica. I wanted to experiment with vase culture, but this is the only one I have that is small enough. It has been in a vase since December, and really loves it!.
