Bonjour, comme on dit chez moi.
Hi everybody,
Juste a few words to tell you I write from France, firstly you to know that my english won't be perfect in my posts, but I work on it ! This is also one of my reason to subscribe this forum, I want to improve my languages.
I usually go on lots of different fora, but I never risked to post on this subject. After making my own experience, I've found interesting to exchange some point of views on orchids' culture with other fans, or experts.
On this topic, my knowledge are kind of empiric. I made tests, sometimes with success, in other cases, the beloved plants won a journey without return to the trash (rarely ahah). I own what my budget allow me to buy with my conditions of medical student, although I often forget to ask my credit card's permission. So, I invade my family whith all that stuff, especially my girlfriend who doesn't appreciate that orchids nibble the space around us !
Hope my presentation is quite complete, and forgive clumsy turns.

What types of orchids are you growing?

Happy to see I'm not the only french !
I study in Reims, in Champagne, but I live in Bourgogne.
I forgot the most important, in fact.
Well, I bought a small greenhouse to provide a higher hygrometry, which is not as effective as I expected, with some task lighting.
For the species, I... made experiments, to see what I can bloom : Vandae, dendros, phals of course, brassavolae and others botanicals species, with some preferences for monopodial orchids. I also tried mounted orchids maybe to early, because I discovered this is a full way of culture with its own requirements. I fortunately lost no orchids. (Macroclinium, Gastrochilus, and aerangis)
I want to try a lot of different types before expanding my collection, and the photos on the forum aren't helping.

Welcome to OB Mercaptan.
Are you going to share with us how you chose your rather unusual user name. Does the word have a different meaning in French from the English meaning?

I know what you mean here as well. It's the pictures on this forum that got me really addicted.

Bienvenue, Mercaptan!
At least one day after completing your degree, money will be a little less tight...
Your English is much better than my French - I'd never dare post on a French message board!

Bienvenue sur le meilleur forum du monde! Me, too I'm another frenchie (from Lyon), but I've been mostly living in the Netherlands for the last 4 years.
Me too my bank account gets quite pissed off at me sometimes. But you'll see, once the student days are over there will be no holding you back, you'll be buying and buying and buying. The forum is dangerous, you'll want to buy everything you see! I graduated in the fall, got a job, and am spending way too much on orchids.
Nice that you have a small greenhouse! For the humidity, do you have a fogger in there?

Well, I had basics, and a little more in biochemistry beforestarting medicine. So, I wanted a pseudo in agreement with what I'm doing. And the most important, it sounds well imho ! Maybe is there a meaning that I don't know ?
Anyway, I saw the scientific topic, and I'm fan ! I had also the project to do my own primary hybrids regarding my relations to sciences. (I buy only bota species)

I hope so, in a decade
And thanks, but don't hesitate to correct my posts when the mistakes scratch your eyes !

Lyon, such an amazing city ! I already live there last year, and I want only thing : to live there again once my studies finished !
For the fogger, this is on of my project, but I don't know if it will be effective because of the gravity. I only have orchids on the two last floors for lights, and finally the fog will be under the orchids. One more thing to test, one more thing to buy !
Optimize the greenhouse culture in an appartment tooks me a few weeks to see how it could works (One of my bigger mistake was to neglect the ventilation ), and to leverage my botanical kwnoledge. In fact, I try too reproduce the same conditions in the nature. So, I drop the ventilation at night to increase hygrometry, when the stomates open. During the day, I manage to increase temperature up to 33-35 ° (91F) for a few hours.
