I am not new to the OB but just starting to post and read other posts. I'd love to know what photo program(s) allow you to show off your plant and leave everything else in the background black.

Thanks RobS for your post. That's what I have been doing - thought there might be a better way and not have to "pose" each plant I want to photo.

Posing is probably the easiest to do, and I think that programs that would do that may be expensive. If the black doesn't turn out as black as you like you can always use a basic photo editing software to adjust the contrast. I do that when my black background turns out a bit grayish, and it does the job well.

I find it easiest to post them as well. I have an 'blackout' roller blind that I drape over some chairs then use to pose the orchid in front of it. Seems to work quite well.

Indeed modifying the contrast helps but also try to avoid direct light on the black background. I still haven't done this but I'll probably cover a box with black velvet on the inside and then put the plants in front.

You shouldn't even need a box. If I angle the cloth covered board just right by the window (indirect light) I can get a near perfect black quite often. I don't use velvet, (I found a thick, sort of fuzzy, cotton cloth) so don't kow how much cloth type affects it. I also fiddle with the 'exposure compensation' on my camera being taking the pic, it usually helps a lot as well.
