New member here. I`m a plant nut mainly (up until now) interested in trees and shrubs, especially Rhododendrons. I`m not completely new to orchids; I`ve had a few of them, but they died I`ve been thinking about trying it again with orchids, but preferably with more success this time.

I would like to build a small vivarium- type of an orchidarium (is that the proper term?), and probably plant it with some miniature orchids. The amount of information seems just so overwhelming and scattered that I really don`t know where to start; the terrarium, plants, lights, INFO? Probably the last one first?

The Finnish winter is just so dark and long that I really need some kind of an artificial habitat with living things in it to fiddle with after the garden stops growing. Soon it`ll be less than 6 hours of sunlight a day...

Anyways, I`m looking forward to getting to know this forum, it sure seems like the right place to learn from orchid growing.

Welcome to Orchid Board. Like Jennyfleur I can't help with the orchidarium/terrarium thing, but we have lots of members who grow that way.

Take a look at our Terrarium area. Terrarium Gardening - Orchid Board - Most Complete Orchid Forum on the web ! That's the best place to start and to ask questions.

I am sorry that I can't help with your questions, but I am sure someone will soon. This message is just to say welcome! When I lived in Oregon (the Pacific Northwest) I remember the color and hundreds of varieties of Rhododendrons in bloom in the spring. Those Rhodys as many a native would call them were beautiful.

Welcome to Orchid Board! You will find lots of good information here. I know what you mean about the winters as I lived in Stockholm for a year, and spent New Years in Helsinki.

Welcome to the Orchid Board. Start with what size of an unit do you have room for? Give us an idea what you want and then I think people will chime in.
