Default Hello! I'm a new member but an old Orchidaholic

Hi Everyone
I came across this site thru another orchid forum. I've been lurking for a week or so and thought I'd post. I live in Palm
Bay Fl. I have quite a few (73 at last count) orchids, mainly cattleya and dendrobiums. I have four vanda that are on their last legs. I have them for about five years, no blooms and loss of leaves. I also have no luck with Phals. Originally I have over 130 cats on shelves around the pool which has a screen enclosure. They did not do well. I've moved them back under the patio roof, hoping the get more color and bloom a little better. My pool faces south, so I think the sun is too strong from sunup to sunset. I hope to learn from this forum. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures, I will share my flowers.

Hi and

The sun here in Florida is a bit too much for Catts, they need a little more protection...but your vandas should do great hanging in the screenroom. The key is LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of water

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome. I think you will enjoy this group. But please, let us help your Vandas. CB977 and I live in the droughtshine state also. We both love vandas and have many. Water, water, water is the key with vandas. I actually use medium to large bark chunks to hold moisture for mine as I can not be around three or four times a day to hose them.
They are also voracious feeders.
Check back with us and save those chids.

Aboard imadigger, it's great that you have found this forum where you will be enriched with information and am sure you will share in your experiences as well. Yep, we love those s

Noting your over on the east coast, very familiar with Palm Bay, will be moving that way in about a year or so, my father-in-law lives in Grant on Grant Farm Island. My mother-in-law grew orchids and was having problems with them when they moved to the island and noting her conditions were not like inland living. How far are you from the ICW? I am not understanding what your saying you get sun-up to sun-down south sun??? In what direction is your home sitting??? From what I am thinking, could be dangerous when I do that, your home might be sitting northeast (front of home). If this is so, your conditions are very warm and dry with little air movement, being the pool area getting southwest exposure, than again . You have made the right move putting your catts under your patio roof, near a fan? would be grand. Being around the pool area your humidity level should be most effective...sounds like you made the proper move with them. Keep us updated on the progress.
