Good morning! Having just come across this wonderful place, I have to say that I am quite thrilled in the discovery. I hope to learn much here. I have been growing orchids for a few years ... a few with great success ... a few with dismal failure . And as I am just a mere hobbyist, let me apologize ahead of time for gleaming more valuable information from all of you then I'll ever be able to give in return.

Hi Richard...welcome to Orchidboard

We're quite thrilled to have you join our community

What types of 'chids have you been growing?
Can you grow outdoors in Nevada? I know the heat there is even more brutal than ours here in Florida

Prepare yourself for a whole new world...our members are varied in the types of 'chids and the way they're grown Watch out for the Paphs...they sneak up on ya

As my friend Dennis said...you'll find yourself answering questions along with the rest of us I think it happens through osmosis

Check out our gallery to see some of the lovliest orchid photos...anywhere! We also have a nightly chat, usually starts around 8pm est.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the OB! Glad you joined! Wow Nevada and orchids! You'll have to share your growing set up! How do you beat the heat? Do you grow indoors? What types do you grow?

Love to know more about your Chids!

Richard, good to have you with us. Yeah, I agree with what has already been said. In addition, you have grown orchids, you will be sharing your experiences. No question about it. I would also like to know how you deal with the heat. I am in a dry hot Florida locale and I would benefit from your experience.
No super arrogant masters here. Just fellow addicts.

Until I put in a dedicated room or greenhouse, the orchids stay pretty much scattered about the house. None go outdoors at all. During even the summer here, the nights get far too cold for them. Heck, I've seen it snow here every month but August. Followed by 105+ temps soon thereafter. Guess that's what I get for being a mile up in the middle of the desert.

We only get 50 or so cloudy days a year, and I've found that the daily sun is far too strong to keep anything growing close to the windows. The greenhouse I'm planning will have either tinted windows or light shades. West and East facing windows seem to work better than South. I've burnt a few orchids during the warmer months by not keeping an eye on light intensity closely enough.

We average between 6% and 12% humidity here for most of the year. Therefore the plants all sit on gravel drain pans and the moisture is checked daily. Humidifiers work somewhat but the rooms are too large and open to satisfactorily adjust the humidity. Best place I've found for them has been the master bathroom window ... humidity and light are just right. Unfortunately my wife likes to make snide remarks on our corner of the "Nevada jungle".

I currently have a few as of unrecognized orchids that have been given to me by friends and/or rescued by my wife from the garden section of the grocery store she manages. I've got some ideas of what they might be but am waiting for the blooms before I actually come to any definitive conclusions. Others: Brassia Edvah Loo, a struggling Brassavola, Dendorbium Orglade. There's also one that still has the tag "Issata Nagata" that I know nothing about. It was fairly dead when I got it, but now has nice white roots and new growth.

Richard
