My log in name is an attempt to be clever with my initials (JAM) in Key West. I'm a fairly good grower with more than a dozen orchids of different varieties blooming right now. I'm stumped by my Den. Bonnie Riley (Den. farmeri x Den. chrysotoxum). I've had it for years. It doesn't keep leaves for very long let alone bloom, but it doesn't die either! I'm trying to find the culture for it with no luck beyond it should grow well with Cats. Mine doesn't! One website divides Dens into three categories: Nobile, New Guinea and Australia. The "chrysotoxum" aspect comes from S China, NE India and the Indochinese peninsula. Depending on where Bonnie Riley hails from may offer the answer to my problem--Key West is too hot in the summer and even in winter not cool enough at night? Anyone have one? Can I summer it in the AC in the house in a bright window? Help would be appreciated.

I am am indoor growing of orchids 90+ and keeping the level of a/c is not a trick as we well know living in Florida. Dends like bright light, east, south, shaded west, with the north light it might take a bit of getting use to but will come around though blooming my be hindered. I would go for it, keep humdity on the upper level, water in the summer more than the winter with good air circulation and you should some blooms after a winters rest

Juding by the input I'm getting here and elsewhere, I'm thinking the winter rest is what I've been overlooking. I'm going to keep and eye on it in my shaderoom (I have two new leaves after nothing all winter) through the spring and summer and if all is well, bring it in for individual attention in the winter.

Hi there jaminkw, welcome to the OB forum
That big bad Den giving you trouble
I would summer this one outside in very bright light, even sunlight for the early morning hours. No deep shading for this orchid a lessening of water thru out the winter months, for some dens just a good spraying to keep mites of will help and coolish tempts can all play a role in seing this orchid bloom.
Don't give up -- just try a different way the next time around

I'm putting all the helpful tips I've gotten together and will move this baby out of the shadows for the spring and summer watching it carefully. The key, though, sounds like it's going to be the rest period with little water or fertilizer in the winter. I'm crossing my fingers. Wish I'd known about these boards before I lost my Miltonia and countless other "difficult" choices I've made.

Give your Den fertilizer only during the grow season, and none during the off or resting season.
Cheryl can give you a better idea when that would be since our zones are different

It's a shame to loose orchids, but we live and learn what their needs and how to care for them.
I'm glad your here, don't look back - Press on

I've just recently got into growing Milts and they should bloom soon. If your ever willing to get some more of these, we can learn these orchids together

to the board. Unable to help you with your Den. If you grow any of the miniature Oxyglossum Dens, then I can offer you some advise with these.

I agree with the other members that light is probably one of the most important culture requirements for getting Dens to bloom.

Enjoy the board.

I've gotten some great advice on "boards." All who seem in the know agree. I've probably identified my problem as not honoring a winter rest period. I'm looking forward to keeping it going through the summer so I can try to treat it differently next winter. Love that your board emails me when I get a post. I'm traveling in my motor coach right now and would not have checked the site if I didn't get the email. I learned that a lady named "Bonnie Riley" lives in Homestead! Homestead is the mainland end of the chain of islands, 130mi from where I live.
