Default Complete "newbie" from PA

I am very new to orchids and gardening in general. I have been keeping planted freshwater tanks for a couple of years, and have been learning a great deal about plants in general from barrreport.com and reading some new books (such as "Botany for Gardeners").

A long way to go!

My interest in coming here is to learn a little more about orchids and the like to use in vivaria. I have a specific interest in keeping dart frogs or mantellas in a beautifully planted, large vivarium.

I will be trolling the threads here for awhile, I suppose! :-)

Hi Welcome to Orchidboard

I'm sure you'll learn everything you need to know here. We have a number of members into dart frogs and vivs...and some of us have a couple of orchids

Do you have any 'chids yet?

Hey Rusti. Glad you joined. A few of us here grow orchids in vivariums were we also grow frogs. Have you started any vivarium projects? Kudos on the planted aquariums, I struggle to keep my emergent plants happy.

Wow, now that's a welcome! (Usually my inbox is all tech support questions, this is quite the welcome relief.)

As far as an actual viv, Tindomul1of9, I do not have one yet. Actually, it was an order placed with Black Jungle for some ghost wood and other items that prompted my joining and posting here.

I have a problem. When online late at night, avidly reading everything I can about a subject arouses my curiousity and interest -- in this case vivariums and dart frogs -- I really should not visit interesting online stores.

Sigh.

So, I ended up ordering a couple of plants, one of which is a small orchid (Ludisia discolor). The next morning I realized that I really do not know one thing about orchids. As Shakespeare wrote "Aye, there's the rub."

So, now I am trying to figure out where I'm going to put a vivarium in a 20-long aquarium I have empty and available, and what I'm going to put in it. Luckily the order has not shipped yet. (Actually, that reminds me, they've still not returned my call and it has been several days.)

So, aside from barrreport.com, and a plethora of other news web sites, I now have more reading here!

Thanks for the welcome!

Ludisa discolor is pretty easy to grow. It will especially like being in a viv. BTW welcome to OB!
