Hello - Newbie from the UK
Hiya. I'm new to Orchid Board, but not new to orchids and orchid growing. I started off with one Phalaenopsis that's been around for 5 or so years (it's now got the nickname Big Mama because of it's size), but it's only been in the past couple of years that I decided to start a Phal collection. I'm a sucker for mistreated orchids that need a bit of TLC, and always ask for a discount on the price (I've been very lucky so far). I've recently spread out into other orchid alliances and hope they do as well as the Phals.
I also got the shock of my life today and discovered one of my smaller Phals is scented.

Hi Sunny and Welcome
I only joined the board a couple of days ago myself
I live on the edge of London so we are neighbours
I stopped being a sucker for the mistreated plants as I kept running out of space and now concentrate on Cym's (with a few other thrown in for variety)

WEOLCOME!!! You will find lots of helpful information here. feel free to post any questions you have.
i started about the same way as you, i always was a sucker for the phals that needed tlc. and i ALWAYS asked for a discount, not once was i let down. but now, its getting out of hand, i not only dont have room, but its getting irritating not knowing what exactly i have. so ive made a point to not buy any noid phals. i will however buy a noid or two to experiment with i.e. mounting, or s/h
im getting into catts now, but i still love a good phal once in a while.
your fragrant phal, is it a noid? or is it named, if so, what? what does it smell like? what does it look like?

Welcome to the orchid board, so many of us started with Phals, they are the standard all-time favorite for gift giving. I have several myself, but I don't buy any without tags. Enjoy, lots of helpers here to get you going with your growing addition.

Hello and welcome to the OB which is a brilliant place to learn and make friends. I'm also a Brit and used to live in Acton in the late 80's

It's a small world, Hedge. I actually live in Acton.
@UKCat, I've already run out of space, but it doesn't seem to have stopped me.
@help, some of my orchids that required TLC have been ones other than Phals, some have been reduced just because they weren't in flower. I think my best bargin was a half price Burrageara Nelly Isler in perfect condition with 2 flower spikes.
As for the fragrant Phal it's a NOID. It's a hyacinth scent as far as I can tell. A picture of the flower is attached. It looks bigger than it actually is. In reality it's only 5cm.

Nice looking Phal the best plants are the 1/2 price ones in good condition.
I was more of a sucker for the sick Paphs ... I would go out to Harlow garden center and see what was on offer, not a good idea as they have quite a good mixed noid orchid selection most of the year.
