Default Hello from a new member in the UK

Hi all,

I have a few orchids and have been growing plants (and keeping most of them alive ) for a few years now.

I have lurked around the edges of this board for about 2 years, when I do a search this board comes up quite a lot and I have found some very useful info on here.

In the last couple of years I have started a bit of a Cymbidium collection (40 plants so far. not that many yet ) and also have mostly cool growing orchids with a couple of warm growers in a viv set up.

My 'problem' started when I quit smoking and I found I had all this spare money and needed a new, healthy addiction ....
Now my Husband is complaining we have no room in the house and is thinking of building me a cool green house as all of my plants come in for the winter and take up so much space he is starting to think orchids as a hobby were not a good idea

Welcome to Orchid Board UKCat I'm also in the UK though a bit more north than you.

Cyms like to be outside in the summer and are not really a good house plant in this country. I have mine (only one) in full sun in the sunniest spot in my garden. In the winter I plan to keep it in my cool greenhouse (which was only built this spring). I'm mostly growing warn orchids just now but have started to build up my cool growing collection since hubby helped me build the greenhouse (OK he built it and I helped as he knows how to do those sorts of things )

Hi Rosie,
Yes nearly all of my Cyms are outside at this time of year
At the moment we have set up a staggered type pole and frame construction so that plants hang at different levels, the garden is south facing but they only get morning and eveining sunlight due to the 3 mature Hornbeam trees we have growing in the garden.

Welcome to the Orchid Board. You have a great husband willing to build you a greenhouse!

Thank you for the welcome

@ Tindomul, I am hoping I can get him to start work on it this autumn so that it will be finished by the end of spring next year .... but I won't hold my breath on that one
