Smile Hello everybody...

I was on the AOS forum and Oscarman (DW) posted a link to this new site...thank you for that. I've been addicted to orchids for about a year now and I am constantly learning something new. I still consider myself to be a newbie although I'm not quite as totally lost as I was at first, thanks to books, the internet, my local orchid society (Orchid Lovers of Spring Hill) and the AOS forum. I'm sure this new forum will also be a great source of information. It seems that orchid maniacs are very generous with their knowledge and hints, and for that, I am very grateful.

Hi...I have a number of catts, a few dens, a lockhartia, 2 vandas, a maxillaria tenufolia, a catasetum, 2 encyclias, a ludisia discolor, a nun's orchid, a few phals, 1 phrag and 1 alcra. I may have left one or two out. Most are grown in clay pots on trays of rocks, the vandas are just hanging loose (no medium, no basket) the ludisia is in a soil/bark mix and the nun's orchid is in soil. I'll be going to the Redlands show in Homestead, FL May20-21 and plan on picking up a few miniatures as a birthday present to myself to try mounting on a nice piece of driftwood I acquired. I would love to get a masdevallia, I think they are so beautiful but from what I understand, my climate is way to hot for them.
By the way, what part of Queens are you in? I only moved to Florida last year, I grew up in Ridgewood/Glendale, then had a house in Richmond Hill, and Staten Island before we made the big move.

I live in Elmhurst, but I went to Grover Cleveland HS in Ridgewood! Class of '98.

I think the Masdevallias will do fine indoors if you have AC's. My understanding is that they don't require alot of light, just lots of moisture, shade, and cool air, around 75 F.

I want to start mounting my own orchids as well. I have a Haraella odorata, its a great little miniature that keeps flowering for me in my 55 gallon fish tank turned terrarium.

I went to Queens Vocational...a long time ago!...but spent a lot of time hanging out at Cleveland. You picked up some beauties at the orchid show in Rock Center. Do you go on the AOS Forum? I see a few of the people from that site now on this one...which is very cool for the people of this site. They are all so generous with their orchid growing knowledge. Nice to meet you...hope to talk again soon.

Talking Yippee!!!

Two out of the 4 plants I entered in our show yesterday got yellow 3rd place ribbons!!! Don't know the specific event they were judged in, I'll find out today but SO exciting! I've only had orchids for about a year and to win 2 ribbons is a really BIG deal for me!!!
