Default a second chance

to everyone on this forum!
I posted this intro on another forum, but I get a much better feeling on this forum, so I'll be sticking around here.

Anyway, here's my situation:

I finally get a chance to try my hand again at growing orchids. I visited the NY orchid shows a couple of times in the late 90's, at the Financial Center (now sadly gone), got hooked, filled my art studio (commercial space) with hundreds of dollars worth of orchids, about which I knew, well, nothing. The studio was mostly cold in the winter, and hot in the summer, and most of them either limped along or died.. I mean, I tried to learn from growers on Long Island, but I simply couldn't meet the plants' needs. Now I'm back in Miss. (native from here), and want to try again.

Truthfully, I LOVE orchids, everything about them.

I'm reluctant to buy orchids until I can work out a space where I can grow them - not going to repeat my mistakes! Oh, I rescued several bedraggled vandas from Lowes & a drooping dendrobium from Kmart (which I divided into three plants). A couple of catts.

Right now in Miss. we are having a dreadful heat wave, so I'm going to the mountains in N. Ga for awhile. Meanwhile, I've stocked up on growing meds, fert, baskets, etc. When I return, it'll be time to start building...

My preference is mostly for species. I see what over-breeding can do: flowers kind of like the rainbow - pastels with no character. IMOO! heh. Don't want to offend anybody!

Welcome to Orchid Board

Great that you are wanting to get back in to this hobby. It's a good idea to work out what you can grow before you start... otherwise you end up like me, buying orchids THEN working out (and spending money) to provide what they need

thanks Ted - I've been twice bitten. The difference is this time around, I will try to create an environment BEFORE I succumb to the seduction.
