New Guy From Thailand
Hello all.
My name is Nathan and I'm an Australian living in Thailand where I work as a teacher. Anyway, the other day I was given a gift of an orchid. I only know three things about orchids. My Uncle used to grow them, they are supposed to be tricky to grow, and they are beautiful. Only four days after being given this orchid there was a gardening market at the local shopping center where I bought another three. So I am here to learn.
I'm looking forward to learning something new, meeting some new people and filling every available space in my small garden with many orchids.

Hi Nathan
They're not hard to grow...if you try to buy your chids according to the conditions you already have. It's when we see and fall in love with a plant that, according to the information, wants something other than what we can supply that we get ourselves in trouble
Do you have areas of your garden that have less or more light? What kind of "extra" time do you have to spend caring for them? These are the questions I think we need to ask ourselves.
What types of chids have you picked up so far?
The folks here on OB love helping each other succeed and we have fun doing it...it's a fringe benefit of being part of our community
If you need help with anything, let us know...we're here to help

What kinds of orchids are they? Thailand has a lot of unusual orchids that a lot of people may not be used to growing...

Hello Nathan:
Welcome to the world of orchid mania. It's one of those deals where you can't "just get one". Once hooked, you're doomed.
Thailand has a multitude of wonderful orchids, other than perhaps Florida probably the best place to grow them outdoors.
In your travels, if you come across a nursery in Thailand who is willing to ship to the US with a phytosanitary certificate and with CITES rules, please let me know their e-mail address. I have gotten deeply hooked on Bulbophyllums and many of them come from Thailand that are not available in the US (I'm in California).
Again, Happy Happy Growing, Killing (aka Crop Rotation) and spending money!
Kindest regards, J

Welcome to Orchid Board
To give advice on your orchids we probably need to know what sort you have. If you don't know them pictures will help.
Hope you enjoy your time here and learn lots. Orchids are addictive, as it sounds like you have already found

It seems you are right about Orchid collections growing. Just last night my wife and I went back to the local shopping center where we bought the first three. We left with two more. I only wanted one more, but having an even number wouldn't look right.
It was at this moment that I realised my wife has been rather devious. She is trying to distract me from other things I collect by getting me interested in growing Orchids. So it seems all I will have to do is threaten to buy more straight razors, hats, or tea pots and I can have all the Orchids I want.

hi nathan... welcome to ob. you're lucky thailand have lots of orchids.. by the way, i'm from malaysia. maybe you can invest some money and buy some good orchid book or get more info from the net, though i did that the other way round - buy more orchid and then buy books when i need references
on the devious part, my husband also is taking advantage of this... he shoo me out in the late afternoon to attend the orchids so i don't disturb him watching tv. at night he told me to study the books if i ask to change channel. manipulative...
