Unhappy Squirrels aren't so cute.

hey there.

I'm wondering if anyone has some proven method for keeping squirrels in check. My orchids (Cattleya types) all live outside, year round, so I need to figure this out. A few months ago, I moved to a new place, where I've placed everything in the backyard. My old place had a porch well above ground level, so squirrels never were a problem.

Now, I find that they pull out all the Spanish moss hanging from pots, and pull sphagnum out of the pots. Sometimes, they bite into plants. I'm worried that it's just going to get worse.

I tried the fox urine granules, and some sprays that are supposed to keep small animals away. Didnt work.

I found one nest and pulled it down, but I think there must be more. The nest I pulled down was topped with a nice, fresh bed of Spanish moss. Grrr.

No clue how to help you but someone should come along soon with an idea.

Are your chids hanging? Or in pots at your new place. You could try mounting them or hanging from baskets possibly, if they are currently in pots.

Well,
This is not an easy one... If it were me I'd try to put nuts etc out for them for food- (so they dont go chewing on your leaves)
As well as put them out a chunk of sphagnum moss so they can 'serve themselves' for their nests & not use the one in the orchids..? Apparently they are very clever animals & can be trained.....

Yeah. I think I'm gonna try making a spot for them with lots of attractive nesting materials and some nuts. They even get into the hanging pots, jumping from one to the next. I've seen them in action! They're pretty clever.
