Smile New Here, Growing Orchids in Oregon

Just found this board doing a google search on Odontocidium Golden Gate. It's been so long since mine has bloomed I forgot what the flower looked like.

Anyway, I'm somewhat of a novice at growing orchids. I've been at it for a few years though I'm not completely passionate about it just yet. I have other hobbies that compete for my time. I have most of the usual suspects in my small collection. I got interested in them when my DS started collecting them when he was 12....he's 20 now! I'm not doing anything fancy with them at the moment. They will have to be happy with a windowsill and humidity trays until I can figure out something better.

Hi quiltergal! And welcome fellow Oregonian.....
I would guess it is not the same plant, but I have a Bllra. Tropic Splendor 'Golden Gate'. Interesting the Golden Gate portion would be used in totally different plants! Mine bloomed beautifully last fall (2nd time). I have been challenged though getting it to grow without pleated leaves - not enough watering or humidity they say......

Bonjour Quiltergal and welcome to the forum. I totally understand what your saying. I have a couple other hobbies myself, it's important to stike a balance so we can enjoy all of them to the fullest. And then there's reality, Uh yes where would we all be without that

I hope you enjoy your time here with us

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'll try and get some pictures posted this evening when I'm home from work. I only have two phals that are regular rebloomers. My DS was taking care of some of mine but he moved out last May so I'm on my own now. A few of them were outside summer before last and didn't get watered often enough, and were pretty much on deaths doorstep. They are making a slow comeback with a lot of TLC and regular watering. That's what happened to the Odontocidium. It looked really bad for about a year, but now it's starting to send out new shoots, so maybe there's hope for it yet.

Our local orchid society had it's annual show last weekend. I purchased a new phal Night Leopard (it's the one in my avatar), and a den. nobile with no name. It's absolutely gorgeous. Maybe one of you will recognize it and pass the name on to me. I exercised much more restraint this year than last. Last year I came home with 6 new orchids!

Welcome, and where in sunny southern orygon are you located? Our family spent many years there in K'Falls and Grants Pass with US Forest Service. Both kids born there! I really covet the weather you have there - think it's the best I've seen in my travels, especially for orchids. Had a greenhouse of orchids in Grants Pass when were there and miss it a lot. I look forward to seeing lots of pics
