Hi all -

My wife and I have just begun with orchids. We have four - three Cymbidiums and an Oncidium. We just repotted and they look quite happy. Wish us luck!

Here are the pics of the two blooming orchids. The Cymbidium tag says:

Cym.
Cym. Lady Spring 'Nancy'
x Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' 4N

We don't know what that means - a cross?

The Phalaenopsis doesn't have a tag. It is small - maybe twelve inches high.

The other Cym. and the Onsidium are not blooming right now. I was wrong when I said there were three Cymbidiums it's two Cyms, a Phalaenopsis and an Oncidium.

Your Cym name tag -

- Cym. Lady Spring 'Nancy': Lady Spring is a hybrid name, Lady Spring is (Cym Doris Aurea x Cym Sensation). 'Nancy' is a cultivar name, someone had a Lady Spring plant judged and received a flower quality award and then gave that plant a cultivar name, always shown in single quotes.

-Cym. Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' 4N is also a hybrid name, Mighty Mouse is (Cym Pajaro x Cym Redwood). 'Minnie' is a cultivar name. 4N is referring to the plants number of complete sets of chromosomes. Important to know for breeding purposes.

The cross was registered in 6/15/2009 by the hybrid originator L.Batchman. So the current name of your is Cymbidium Spring Mouse (Cym Mighty Mouse x Cym Lady Spring).

Charlie -

Thanks a lot! That answered a lot of questions quite succinctly. Thanks again!
