Smile Growing orchids and cymbidiums in Cape Town

Hi. I am new to this site and extremely ignorant! I am hoping to find people who are experienced at growing orchids in Cape Town, South Africa! Any help out there would be most appreciated- how much light is needed- are they better indoors or outside, how much water etc. etc.
I have just bought a Zimbabwean orchid from a guy on the street- anybody know how to treat these?
Thanks for any advice please.

hi viv

I think zimbabwe orchids are a bulbophyllum, they need a bright indirect light. Dont grow any myself so can't help further. I'm sure the other, more knowledgable members will offer more help.

Hi Viv and welcome to Orchid Board

I can't help with the orchid care in your part of the world as I'm right the way arround in the UK.

Can you show a picture of your Zimbabwean orchid as it will help people to understand what it is. "Zimbabwean orchid" is probably a common name used locally to you, but a Photo would help us recognise what it is.

Hi guys!

I'm new to the board and like viv I also bought a "Zimbabwean Orchid" from a street vendor in Cape Town. I think it may be a Bulbophyllum, but I'm actually not sure. I have decided to pot it after a few weeks, because I live in a flat and the bare mount is a bit difficult to balance neatly on surfaces. The mount is not immersed in soil, rather it sits on top of a layer of soil, surrounded by a little soil but mostly very large bark pieces. Anyway, I have just realized that one of the leaves are becoming yellow, and some of the pseudobulbs look a little thin. I have watered the plant once since potting it three days ago, and I mist it once a day. The soil still feel moist, but not soaked or wet. I try to avoid misting the leaves, though. Also, the plant is situated in a sunny window sill with at least six hours of relatively bright light. Maybe the light is too bright or its too direct? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I will also post a picture of the plant for ID purposes.

Cool orchids! They look like bulbos to me. I would check the roots, maybe they are rotting, if not then it might be too much light. Or not enough humidity. Welcome both to the Orchid Board!!!

Default Mystery! What's wrong with bulbo??

I don't think it's too much water. It may be low humidity or too much sun. I also noticed that while some of the pseudobulbs are nice and firm to the touch, some feel a bit dehydrated (not so firm, yet not at all mushy or anything from rot or too much water). The leaves on all pseudubulbs seem fine, except for the one yellow leaf. What could cause this? The soil is still moist, but not at all clumpy. It is basically like the sand you would find on dunes on the beach - it just feels cold/slightly moist. Do you think it's time for more water? Also, do you think a bowl of water next to the plant would improve humidity? What should the roots look like? Mine seem light brown and quite dry. I bought it like this a month ago. Do you think it would have survived this long if its roots were dead? This is my first orchid and I really don't want to kill it:-(
