"how long would it take to notice a difference in the leaves if they are getting too much or too little light."

If it is getting too much light, direct sunlight, it will get sunburn in a few hours. I was told to think of a baby's skin, if a baby would get sunburn, so will your phal.
You probably would not notice too little sun at this time as this is not the time of year for a lot of new root / leaf growth. I think the phals will be OK under your African Violet conditions until spring when you can move them outdoors.

Charlie

PS- where in SC are you ? Any where near Orchidview in Moncks Corner, SC ??

Thanks, now I can stop worrying about them burning. And no, I'm not near Monks Corner. Currently, I'm up in the Greenville area.

That's really interesting...although I really don't understand the hybridization process.
On somewhat of a side note:
I was reading their page on their Phal. violacea which they call a blue...but it's not really blue, it looks purple to me. I know there aren't any true blue orchids, but I also read (somewhere on this forum) about the glow in the dark orchids made from lightning bug dna...and it occurs to me, why can't they get some dna from something that's blue to make a true blue orchid? ...just a random thought.
