I just joined this forum after linking over from the Vivarium Forum. I have been growing orchids outdoors in Southern California for about 4 years. Mostly Cymbidiums, with some Cattlya alliance plants. I also have quite a few Paphiopedilums which summer outside and come into the south side of my kitchen couonter in the fall.
I don't have a greenhouse or anything fancy. I grow most of my plants at the south end of my patio, which has a an overhang covered with 50% shade cloth above a large redwood bench I built to keep orchids on. I also hang a number of plants at the outside edge of the patio. There is a misting system on a timer above all the plants to cool and provied humidity in hot weather.
I am thinking of eventually building a shade house in my yard. I grow plants that will survive outdoors in my climate. I have too many other things going on to invest the time or money in a greenhouse right now. Maybe someday.
