Hi from Catonsville, MD
Hello everyone! My name is Chris Todd, and I live in Catonsville, MD. I got interested in orchids via a circuitous route - keeping tropical fish led to keeping aquatic plants, particularly cryptocoryne and lagenandra, which got me interested in tropical biotopes of SE asia, which got me interested in Nepenthes and other carnivorous plants, and then I discovered that (surprise) there are lots of orchid species from that area as well.
I have a couple of store-bought Phals of unknown species or hybrid, and I'm in the process of setting up three terraria in which I intend to grow carnivorous plants and orchids: a 54 gallon corner bowfront, a 75 gallon, and a 65 gallon - kind of like a typical 55g, but four inches taller, which (when laid on its side) has a 2' x 4' growing space 12" high. I'm kind of thinking I'll do one for seasonal/temperate plants, one lowland tropical, and one highland tropical, but we'll see.
I'm looking forward to learning from the board, and hopefully (eventually) contributing back.

Welcome to OB Chris!
Which specific SE Asian biotopes are you interested in?
I'm originally from the Philippines and have lived in several SE Asian countries.
Keep us updated on your projects.

Primarily those from Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, into Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Papua New Guinea. I have to admit a fair amount of ignorance of the biotopes of the Phillipines, unfortunately. Though I love learning!

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the OB. You will love it here.
I'm interested in seeing your setups, too as I have an aquarium that sooner or later I will set up as an orchidarium. (40 gal high). If you can, take pics of your progress in setting them up and post them as many will be interested.

Welcome aboard Chris! Small world! You'll find orchids as addicting as the Crypts. Glad to see another expanding their horizons.
Cheers.

Oh, dear! I'm in big trouble, then! I don't have hobbies, I have obsessions...
