I'm from Northern Ontario, a tricky place to obtain and raise chids, but I just can't resist. I started out with a few phals - noids mostly and they do really well. I attended my first Orchid show last fall and the world opened up for me! Can't wait for the next one. I really appreciate finding the tidbits of info from the board to help me find just the right environment for each type. My biggest issue is humidity during our long winter, but running a small humidifier has really helped. I even have a Vanda with two new leaves and lots of root growth. If it eventually blooms for me I'll be in seventh heaven! well enough rambling and thanks for welcoming me.

Welcome Miyuki from a fellow Canadian in Canada's far east! It is certainly just as tricky to grow orchids here as your area! But you'll be surprised at what you can grow! Welcome to our world!

Not if you have fish tanks it's not
Welcome aboard, Miyuki.
I would love to try a vanda, not sure if i have that kinda light, nevermind the space they tend to need.

Regards
Gloria

Welcome to the Board. Glad you could find us! Orchid shows are fantastic, especially for a first timer. My first orchid show was last year, and this year I have two to go to. I can't wait!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. My Vanda is in a cedar slat basket, hanging in a western window for now (during the winter months). At the bottom of the basket I placed large dolomite stones that hold moisture quite long. The room is heated with a gas stove that radiates heat nicely, and as the heat rises through the stones, Vanda gets more humidity and warmth than anything else in the room. I mist it thoroughly every day during the week and a soaking on Saturday morning. I bought it in bloom in November, and since then has put out two new leaves and each root tip has healthy new growth, so I think she's pretty happy. I'm not sure what summer will bring - outdoor exposure or not - we'll see. I've attached a photo of my "Miyuki" under Everglades Sunshine "Pure Gold". He is enjoying the sun and warm mist humidity from below. Now if I could only keep him out of the pebble trays!
