Hi Farfire and welcome to OrchidBoard.
In my view the most important thing if you are new to Phals is to get the watering right. Too wet and the roots will rot, two dry and the plant and roots will die from lack of water. So once you've got the watering sussed you can keep them alive and then you can work out everything else.
My tip is that it needs to be in a pot with holes in the bottom and if possible a clear pot. Water thoroughly and allow lots of water to run through the pot and out the bottom. Allow all excess water to drain away and do not leave it standing in water for any long period of time. Don't water again until the roots are showing as silvery through the clear pot.
