Default Hello

I used to grow Phals, Catts and Vanda's in my backyard in the Philippines. When I moved to the Midwest 25+ years ago I decided I couldn't grow orchids here.

Two months ago I got hold of 2 Catt compots and decided that even if I couldn't flower orchids in West Central Illinois, I could at least watch them grow. So now I have 60 + seedlings growing like wild under lights and I'm an addict again!

This time I'd like to try something totally new-- Oncidium intergenerics.

I'd love any feedback/ suggestions except the type that tells me I've totally lost my mind.

Hi Orchidbingo and welcome to Orchid Board.

I don't think anyone here will say you've lost your mind. People here will just encorage you to get even more

I'm afraid that apart from saying welcome, I can't help much. I've never grown Catts or seedlings and I've never tried Oncidiums either. I'm sure someone else will be along soon who has though and if not, try asking on our Oncidium Alliance sub-forum.

Hi OrchidBingo,
Welcome to the OB!

You certainly have picked up the addiction again...you know they say that it starts with just one!

I did see your lost mind...hanging out with a bunch of other orchid lunatics...it was in good company.

Good luck with your new orchid endeavors!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

My 40 seedlings of Epc. Siam Jade 'AVO' and 35 seedlings of Blc. Dal's Rapture 'Water Colors' ( 2 months out of compots) were getting lonely so...

I adopted the following from Fender's Flora (this time all BS or NBS plants:

1. Blc. Love and Luck (Love Sound `Dogashima`, AM/AOS x Arabesque `Golden Zebra`, AM/AOS)

2. Blc. Against the Wind (Blc. Michael Gaine x Blc. Dream Trader)- this plant is huge!-- shipped bare root and I will have to put it in a 7-8 inch pot- it has 6 new growths

3. Potinara Chia Pet (Blc. Chia Lin `New City`, AM/AOS x Pot. Beaufort Gold `Susan Fender`, AM/AOS)

4. C. Tomonori `Puanani`, AM/AOS x C. Starry, Starry Night

5. Pot. Memoria Mario Lanza (Pot. Carolina Splendor x C. Chocolate Drop)- this plant is even bigger than number 2-- will have to go into an 8 inch pot and/or may have to divide-- 8 new growths

6. Pot. Carolina Splendor x Blc. Goldenzelle `Taida`, HCC/AOS

7. Pot. Good Vibrations (Pot. Little Toshie `Gold Country`, AM/AOS x Blc. Chia Lin `New City`, AM/AOS)- this was a freebie shipped bare root ready for a 4-5 inch pot.

The plants are lovely.

So thank you all for the welcome, the advice, the encouragement, and the enabling!

My son is leaving for college next month-- his room has South and West facing windows- please don't tell him I'm measuring it for plant benches and lighting fixtures

Now I'm working on a list of oncidium intergenerics I can't live without. This would be a totally new venture as I've never grown any before.

I confess that I am officially addicted once again and totally out of control. At least this time I'm limited to space available in our house-- I can't spread them throughout the trees in our back yard like I did in the Philippines.

Please don't any one encourage me but I am thinking about trying my hand at a cross or two once again. It's tempting but I'm not sure I want to get involved in flasks again. Maybe I'll create a cross on paper...

Hey Orchidbingo,
Boy, you've been bit bad by that crazy orchid bug...

Fender's has great plants, as you've discovered...I hope that they all do well for you!

Hi Orchidbingo, you have a great collection going! I too am from Central Illinois & it is so nice to finally meet a fellow orchid enthusiast in the same area/growing conditions. I have found that most orchids love our hot humid summers. I put mine outdoors in the summer and they grow like crazy.

And hello to everyone else too, I am fairly new to this forum, my usual hang out is broken. But I think I really like it here.
