Growing in Buffalo, NY! Female
Default Growing in Buffalo, NY!

Hi all! I first got into orchids several years ago in Louisiana and killed a few phalaenopsis before I figured out what I was doing -- but once I did, I had cattleyas and dendrobiums blooming and growing well. I moved here about four years ago and left my orchids down south, but I'm in an apartment with a good space for them now, so I am back. Picked up a Miltassia and then a Cattleya at Lowe's, and both have new growths doing well, so I took a plunge last night and ordered a few from a grower. They do better in groups, after all.

One of the ones I'm getting, I just realized I'm not sure of the species and that may affect how I set up their habitat. It's definitely a dendrobium and the grower lists it as "Den Blue Sky"; can't find any other information for that name online, though. I know I've seen flowers of this form before, but that's not telling me enough. Once it actually gets here, of course, I can take pictures of the whole plant but I'm curious now so I'm attaching the grower's photo of the bloom. Any guesses?

Hi Poetiscariot and welcome to Orchid Board.

I'm afraid I don't know much about your Den, hopefully someone else can chime in. It looks really pretty from the growers photo so I hope it does well for you.

Looks to be a member of the Section Phalaenanthe. There are many hybrids, many are not registered. They are grown for the big box stores in huge numbers.
Should do well in bright light, with good air movement and warm temps. Dry rest in winter and spring. Then copious regular watering and fertilizer while new growths are developing in summer and autumn. They do best in small pots with excellent drainage.
